Mark 4:21-34 – When Jesus comes on the scene in Mark 1, he says, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” But Jesus never defines what the kingdom of God is – leaving us to say, “Okay Jesus, what is it? Tell us what is at hand.”
Instead, Jesus begins to refer to the kingdom of God as a mystery, a secret, something that is hidden (4:11, 22). Finally in chapter 4, he begins a couple of sentences like this, “The kingdom of God IS…” We hold our collective breath waiting for the definition.
But Jesus says, “The kingdom of God is LIKE…” He uses comparisons to tell us what the kingdom of God is.
In order to understand his comparisons, his parables, you have to be able to decode them or unlock them. The key to unlocking them is JESUS.
