Romans 9:1-13 – After assuring us of God’s covenantal love in Romans 8, the reader may be left with some natural questions.
God has professed undying, covenantal faithfulness and love before: To Abraham – “I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed” (Genesis 12:3); to Isaac and Jacob as well. But you don’t get very far into the Bible before God is ready to destroy his people (Exodus 32:9-10).
It doesn’t get better from there. Through the historical books and prophets, it’s a death spiral for Israel. Even modern history and current events testify that Israel is not the godly nation that God swore to love forever. Where is that covenantal love for Israel now?
Did God’s word to Israel fail? If yes, what’s to say that it won’t fail to us? If yes, Romans 8 is empty.
Paul writes Romans 9 to help us through these questions.
