Genesis 21:8-21 – The story we look at today is a difficult one to read and to imagine the circumstances. There are several things here that are offensive. Abraham and Sarah are not sympathetic characters, Hagar and Ishmael are. Our spiritual father doesn’t act very Christian. The whole thing rings of “Downtown Abbey” style class structure, along with the expulsion of the “problem child.”
But, there is more going on than the expulsion of a child and his mother. God is at work. What God is doing is removing Plan B: (12) “…through Isaac (not Ishmael) shall your offspring be named.” With God, there is no Plan B. The way of faith is trusting God without a safety net.
Why? Because the way of man and the way of God cannot coexist.
