Friends are equal parts wonderful and complicated. Ralph Waldo Emerson, in his essay on Friendship, wrote, “Friendship, like the immortality of the soul, is too good to be believed.”
Even though friends are wonderful, sin has created relational brokenness – between us and God, and us and us – friendships can be complex or difficult, even in the church. Jonathan Holmes in “The Company We Keep” writes, “Deep and meaningful friendships don’t come easily – even within the church, and sometimes especially within the church. And because from time to time we all sense that things ought to be different, we can find the challenges of biblical friendship perplexing, frustrating and discouraging.”
Proverbs, has a lot of wisdom about friends.
