Mark 4:1-20 – In Matthew 10:34, Jesus said, “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.” One of the things that the sword-like character of the Gospel does is divide people between those who embrace the Word and those who reject it. The Word of God does not embrace everyone where they are and affirm who they already are. When Jesus comes he divides people between those who will follow him as disciples and those who reject him. In that way, he comes with a sword.
Jesus communicates a very similar idea through this very familiar parable that we look at today. The parable of the sower is like the cloud that separated the fleeing Israelites from the pursuing Egyptians – darkness to one side and light to the other (Exodus 14:20).
