Romans 5:12-21 – This is known as one of the most difficult passages in Romans.
Part of the difficulty in understanding it is probably because of a cultural stumbling block that we in the West have. We value individualism – not collective solidarity or collective responsibility. Whereas African and Asian cultures make the opposite assumptions; they assume the collective solidarity of the extended family, or tribe, or nation.
Be that as it may, the Bible is calling us out of a cultural understanding of individualism and toward a different understanding of Adam’s sin and it’s effect, and Christ’s righteousness, and it’s gift.
