Mark 13:1-37 – It seems like there’s always someone who is trying to predict when Christ will return. Ironically, many of these predictions have used Mark 13, and its parallel passages in Matthew and Luke, to make such guesses. It’s ironic because Jesus himself warned against making those predictions (and believing them) in the very texts they cite.
What is the purpose of this prophecy then? Beginning in v. 5 and continuing throughout the chapter, there is a running admonition against future speculation at the expense of present obedience. Jesus thrust is NOT predictions, charts, timelines and graphs. His main goal is to exhort his followers to present obedience: Trust God in the present.
