Mark 12:13-17 – Here we have two groups, with diametrically opposed missions, working together for a common goal – to destroy Jesus. We haven’t seen the Pharisees and Herodians collude since Mark 3:6 (after Jesus healed on the Sabbath), “The Pharisees went out and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him.” Here they are again, working their plan.
In this text, their assumption is that two things cannot co-exist: submission to the authority of God and submission to the state. That is the root of their question and the reason they believe they can trap and destroy Jesus.
