Matthew 5:7 – Mercy is not grace, nor is it forgiveness. Mercy is compassion to those who are in need, or are helpless, or are indebted, and have no claim to favorable treatment. Jesus says that someone who gives mercy, will receive it and have well-being because of it.
D.A. Carson writes, “The Christian forgives because he has been forgiven; he forgives because he needs forgiveness. In precisely the same way, and for the same kind of reasons, the disciple of Jesus Christ is merciful.”
