Matthew 5:4 – D.A. Carson calls mournfulness the “emotional counterpart to poverty of spirit.” In other words, if poverty of spirit is spiritual bankruptcy, mourning is the emotional response to that reality – spiritual grief.
And here’s the distinction that exists for those who follow Jesus: We live in a society that laughs at many sins and mourns righteousness. It’s the opposite of the life Jesus’ disciples are to live. Comfort is his promise to those who live this life.
